Personal Development
Hillside Primary School promotes children’s personal development and welfare. It is a whole school commitment to provide engaging learning opportunities for all children. The broad and balanced curriculum-including the extra-curricular programme, contributes to a growth in their personal development. We go beyond the expected so that children have access to a wide, rich set of experiences. We do this by, as example; Careers Day; sporting competitions and events; inviting visitors in to school to talk to and inspire the children; clubs; JLT; trips and visits and through our nurture and mental health and wellbeing support teams.
Our curriculum, based around People, Places and Events, supports learners to develop their character – including their resilience, confidence and independence – and help them know how to keep physically and mentally healthy and make healthy, safe choices in life. The curriculum extends beyond the academic, and provides our children’s broader development, enabling them to develop and discover their interests and talents.
With our Hillside Values at the heart of everything we do, we guide the children to use the values to build and maintain relationships and drive their behaviour and attitudes to learning and life. We support children to keep themselves healthy in mind and body and to keep safe in the world around them, including online. We encourage children to reflect on their learning and experiences and be inspired to try new activities, build skills which help them to be happy, active citizens and realise when their achievements deserve recognition and commendation.
We ensure that children are equipped with important, independent life skills as they head on to their next stage of learning. We work in partnership with our parent and school community to ensure everyone understands what is required for life in modern Britain. We do this through our PSHE curriculum; by equipping children to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society; developing their understanding of fundamental British values; developing their understanding and appreciation of diversity; celebrating what we have in common and promoting respect for the different protected characteristics as defined in law.
We broaden our children’s horizons and give them the belief that they are capable of achieving great things. Our Personal Development offer gives the children the knowledge and understanding they need make informed choices and to be a positive influence in the communities that they belong to.
